Explanations: At first glance this vocabulary appears to be quite easy. However, there are a few words which demand some closer attention. These are words that appear to be the same as in English but have different meanings. These terms are referred to as “faux amis” in French. Two examples here are “la prune” for plum and “le raisin” for grape. In English we would use the word “grape” to refer to the fruit and “raisin” to refer to a dried grape. In French, “raisin” is the fruit itself, directly off the vine. Regarding the word for plum, in French you say “la prune”. In English a prune is a dried plum. Lastly, please pay attention to the words for grapefruit (le pamplemousse) and watermelon (la pastèque) as they differ greatly from English.
