12 Tips For Learning French

  • Set Goals: Set some goals or objectives for yourself. Decide how much you want to learn and in how much time.  Make a time-line of a few months and decide what you will study in the days and weeks to come.
  • Be Persistent With Your Studies: When learning any language it is important to be persistent. It is a very good idea to study a little bit everyday. You will find that by learning something new everyday you will learn faster.
  • Remember Your Love For French: French is such a beautiful language! I think it is the nicest sounding language in the world. When you are learning and find yourself feeling discouraged remember your love for the language.
  • Listen As Much As Possible: As children we all learn our native languages by listening to our parents. The same goes for learning French. I recommend listening to dialogues in lessons, watching movies, listening to music and watching videos online.
  • Practice With Friends: When studying French it is important to reach out to people. This means meeting people who already know French. You can practice with them and they can answer your questions. They can also inspire you!
  • Practice Situational Learning: Situational Learning refers to thinking of real-life situations and learning the vocabulary words associated that that situation. An example could be dating or a dinner party. I find using this method is good for remembering vocabulary.
  • Don’t Be Shy: When you first start learning a new language it is common to feel shy to speak. Maybe you are scared to make mistakes. Don’t worry about it! People will understand what you are trying to say and will encourage you to speak more!
  • Remember You Are Not Too Old: “I am to old to learn” is a common excuse that people use to avoid learning French. You are never too old to start something new. Studies show that learning foreign languages later in life helps to keep the mind in good shape.
  • Avoid The “I’m No Good At Languages” Excuse: A lot of people put off learning French because they think they’re not good at languages. I think that if you really want to learn the language you will even if you don’t think you have a talent for foreign languages.
  • Don’t Worry Too Much About Grammar: A lot of people struggle because they spend too much time learning grammar and verbs. To learn to conversational French fast I suggest spending more time on vocabulary and phrases.
  • Remember The Benefits of Learning French: There are so many benefits to knowing French including being able to have conversations with French people, function in French society, find jobs, make new friends, date French people and travel.
  • Use Online Resources: When I was studying French there was no way to study online. However, today you can take advantage many online courses such as Rocket French. In fact many of the visitors to my site have been very happy with the lessons. Click here to read my full review of the course!
